A drying robe only works as intended when it stays in contact with the damp coat without restricting normal movement. Breed labels are not enough: two dogs of the same breed can have different back lengths, chest shapes and coat volume.
What you need
- a flexible measuring tape;
- your dog standing naturally on a level surface;
- a second person or a few treats if your dog moves during measuring; and
- the current size chart for the exact robe you are considering.
1. Measure the back length
Start at the base of the neck where a collar normally rests and measure along the spine to the base of the tail. Do not measure up the neck or down the tail. Keep the tape following the body without pulling it tight.
2. Measure around the body
Measure the circumference around the broadest part of the chest or ribcage specified by the product’s chart. A drying robe needs enough room for the dog’s body and coat, while its belly strap still needs to secure correctly.
3. Consider coat volume
A dense or long coat can occupy more space than a short coat even when the dogs share the same skeletal measurements. Use the manufacturer’s chart and contact support when a dog sits directly between sizes; do not choose from weight alone unless the chart explicitly says to do so.
Check the fit when the robe arrives
- The neck area should sit flat without pressing into the throat.
- The belly strap should secure the robe without pinching.
- The dog should be able to walk, sit and lie down normally.
- The robe should cover the intended part of the back without dragging on the floor.
- Straps and fabric should not obstruct urination or normal movement.
Introduce the robe gradually
Some dogs are comfortable with clothing immediately; others need a slower introduction. Let the dog investigate the robe, place it briefly, reward calm behaviour and remove it before extending the wearing time. Never force a stressed dog into a garment.
