The right routine depends on the care label and backing material, but a few steps help prevent loose grit from entering the washing machine and keep the mat ready for the next wet walk.
Start with the product’s care instructions
Do not assume that every chenille mat has the same backing, temperature limit or dryer instructions. Check the sewn-in label and the current product page first. Before machine washing
- Let heavy wet mud dry enough to remove loose chunks without grinding them deeper into the pile.

Wash according to the label
Use the cycle, temperature and drying method stated by the manufacturer. Do not add bleach, fabric softener or other treatments unless the care instructions explicitly permit them. More detergent does not necessarily mean a cleaner mat; residue can remain in dense fibres.
How often should a dog mat be washed?
There is no honest universal schedule. A mat used by one small dog in dry weather will not need the same care as a mat handling two large dogs during spring thaw. Use visible condition instead of a made-up calendar.
It is time to clean the mat when:
- loose dirt remains after shaking or vacuuming;
- the pile feels loaded with grit or hair;
- the mat stays damp longer than usual;
- there is a noticeable odour; or
- mud has dried into the fibres.
Dry it completely before reuse
Return the mat to the floor only when the surface and backing are dry. Before placing it back, make sure the floor underneath is also clean and dry. A non-slip backing works best on a clean surface.
What a mat does not replace
